The analysis of ancient costumes has always been an important subject of archeological research. The focus of the present thesis questions the system of womens dresses in the 5th century BC. By taking a close look on classical greek sculpture, vase painting and written sources, it shall be invastigated, if female costumes indicate a specific meaning.Therefore the different typs of clothing have to be seperated from each other in a first step. Secondly the several garments have to be discribed and defined carefully.The pediments of the Zeustemple of Olympia give a good example for the various applications of womens clothing. Not less then three different typs of the Peplos and a Chiton can be discussed and interpreted here. The aim is to develop a semantic system, to connect specivic garments with special groups of women. In ancient Greece women were defind be their age, social status and abilitys. Presumebly it is possible to distinguish between different groups of women through their dresses, like it is meanwhile prooved for garments of men and their social status.>
